28th Aug 1771- England, Extracts from a General Letter from the Court of Directors complimenting the Company's servants to relive the distress of the famine-stricken people; directing that the Europeans, who, during the scarcity would be found guilty of having monopolized the trade in grain and of having compelled the raiyats to see their seed for the next harvest to them, should be dismissed from the public service; and directing the Board to enquire into all the causes to which the decrease of revenue may be traced and into Muhmammed Riza Khan's private conduct during his incumbency as Diwan, to obtain a just and adequate restitution of all the sums which he withheld from the Company, to redress the injuries of persons who suffered from the unjust exercise of his power and to hold an enquiry concerning the application of the large sums which passed through his hands on account of the annual stipends to the successive Nawabs and of the charges of sepoys for the support of their dignity.

The President then laid before the Board the depositions of several witnesses examined on the first charge and secured them against future interpolation by making them attend and swear to the truth of their declarations and brought the day's proceedings to a close by laying before the Board a letter from General Barker and several other papers of intelligence from which it appeared that Muhammad Riza Khan was further guilty of having carried on secret negotiations with the King and the Mahrattas

23nd Feb Fort William-Copy of the deposition, on oath of Yar Mahmud servant of Maharaja Nandakumar, stating that Fath Ullah came to his house and acquainted him with the particulars concerning the Nawab's conduct in connection with the rice business during the famine, and expressed a desire to see the Governor with the papers he had in his possession. Fath Ullah further told him that he had been a servant of the late Mr Maddison who owed a sum of Rs 40,000 to Raja Goordoss(Gurudas), the son of Maharaja Nandakumar, that he could inform him now Ramsundar Dutt, the banian of the late Mr Maddison had embezzled a like sum out of his master's effects and asked him what consideration the Maharaja would allow him for supplying information on that subject. There upon the dependent gave him an obligation for a rupee a day for the performance of what was required of him, and that Fath Ullah, of his own accord, showed to the Raja and some other people, the particulars relating to Muhammad Riza Khan and then ran away with them.

Nil Nil Copy of the translation of a letter under the seal of Afzal-ul-daula or Sardar Jang Bahadru to Major K-k to G-g to Chandernagore, noticing with pleasure the high character he possess and stating, with reference to the representation of Zain-ul-Abidin Khan Bahadur who has lately arrived from the Mahratta army, that he desires to be joined by a body of 15 or 20,000 men and to make an establishment for the necessary charges, that the writer will attend him with what force he may require and exert his utmost to forward their successful issue, if the addresses will inform him of the respective rates to be allowed for foot and horse , send bills of exchange for the charges of the march, from the commencement of which they will receive their pay, and also grant a suitable jagir, to defray the writer's expenses.

Nil Nil Copy of the translation of a letter from Zain-ul-Abidin Khan to Mirza Maseeta, stating that, while he was at Delhi, he had many friendly interviews with his brother and other gentlemen, all of whom enquired of him with much gratitude and affection, that they regard him as their chief protector, that he has some access to the King and Mahratta chiefs and is on a friendly footing with latter; also stating that he solicited Mirza Maseeta's favour in effecting his return to his country, although the chiefs are averse to his coming away.
