Shibsankirtan or Shibayan authored by Rameshwar Bhattacharya in the 18th Century, was published by Calcutta University in 1957. Jogilal Haldar, the professor of Bengali, at Amta College in Howrah district was the editor of the book. Rameshwar Bhattacharya is remembered in the history of Bengali literature chiefly for two works, 'Satyanarayaner Kotha' and 'Shibayan' or 'Shibsankirtan'. Scholars like Dinesh Chandra Sen have determined that Shivayan was composed around 1750s. It had also been possible to determine that Rameswar Bhattacharya was a subject of the zamindar of Karnagarh, located in present day district of East Midnapore, West Bengal. Among the other poets like Ramkrishna Ray, Dwija Kalidas and Dwija Maniram, who have composed epic poems on Shiba, Rameshwar's acquired greater popularity among the readers.
The Shibayan kavya offers a detailed description of the agrarian practices that was followed in the first half of eighteenth century in Bengal. The author even highlights the various challenges faced by an agriculturist during the period.
