About this text

Introductory notes

Kabir(1398-1448) is a North Indian devotional poet, who was born in Banaras and was active in the fifteenth century. His corpus of work has a complex textual history with innumerable manuscripts and variants of poems and aphorisms. According to Vinay Dharwadker, thereare three different schools of manuscript-traditions pertainingto Kabir's work, the Nanak Panth (northern), Dadu Panthi(western)and the Kabir Panth. His work survives in various languages-Braj Bhasha, Avadhi, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Khadi Boli, Punjabi besides showing traces of Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic elements. ऐसा तेरा झूठा मीठा लागा , ताथैं मेरो ग्याँन ध्याँन लीन्हाँ ॥टेक॥
झूठे के धरि झूठा आया, झूठै खान पकाया ।
झूठी सहन क झूठा बाह्या , झूठै झूठा खाया ॥
झूठा ऊठण झूठा बैठण, झूठो सबै सगाई ।
झूठे के घरि झूठा राता, साचे को ण पत्याई ॥

मन रे सरयौ न एकौ काजा, ताथें भज्यौ न जगपति राजा ॥ टेक ॥
बेद पुराँन सुमृत गुन पढ़ि गुनि भरम न पावा ।
संध्या गायत्री अरु षट करमाँ, तिन थैं दूरि बतावा ॥
बनखंडि जाइ बहुत तप कीन्हाँ, कंद मूल खनि खावा ।
ब्रह्म गियाँना अधिक धियाँनी, जंम कै पटैं लिखावा ॥
रोजा किया निवाज गुजारी, बंग दे लोग सुनावा ।
हिरदै कपट मिलै क्यूँ साँई, क्या हल काबै जावा ॥
पहरयौ काल सकल जग ऊपरि, माँहै लिखे सब ग्याँनी ।
कहै कबीर ते भये षालसे, राम भगति जिनि जाँनी ॥264॥
