Introductory notes

Kabir(1398-1448) is a North Indian devotional poet, who was born in Banaras and was active in the fifteenth century. His corpus of work has a complex textual history with innumerable manuscripts and variants of poems and aphorisms. According to Vinay Dharwadker, thereare three different schools of manuscript-traditions pertainingto Kabir's work, the Nanak Panth (northern), Dadu Panthi(western)and the Kabir Panth. His work survives in various languages-Braj Bhasha, Avadhi, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Khadi Boli, Punjabi besides showing traces of Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic elements. Our selection here is from the "Bijak" edition of Kabir's verse published by Belvedere Press.

शब्द ४ संतो देखत जग बौराना ।

सांच कहों तो मारन घावै। झूठे जग पतियाना ॥
नेमि देखा धर्मी देखा, प्रात करै असनाना ।
आतम मारि पखानहि पूजै, उनमें कछु नहिं ज्ञाना ॥
बहुतक देखा पीर औलिया, पढ़ै किताब कुराना ।
कै मुरीद तदवीर बतावैं , उनमें उहै जो ज्ञाना ॥
आसन मारि डिंभ घर बैठे, मन में बहुत गुमाना ।
पीतर पाथर पूजन लागे, तीरथ गर्भ भुलाना ॥
टोपी पहिरे माला पहिरे, छाप तिलक अनुमाना ।
साखी सब्दहि गावत भूले, आतम खबरि न जाना ॥
हिन्दू के मोहि राम पियारा, तुर्क कहै रहिमाना ।
आपस में दोऊ लरि मूये, मर्म न काहू जाना ॥
घर घर मंतर देत फिरत हैं, महिमा के अभिमाना ।
गुरु के सहित सिख्य सब बूड़ें, अन्तकाल पछिताना ॥
कहैं कबीर सुनो हो संतो , ई सब गर्भ भुलाना ।
केतिक कहौं कहा नहिं माने, सहजै सहज समाना ॥
